– 20kWh battery provides 61 km all-electric range and up to 687 total range –
Mississauga, ON., Sept. 26, 2022 – The next generation of the world’s best-selling plug-in hybrid electric SUV, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV1 will be arriving in Canada with 40 per cent longer all-electric range. The 2023 Outlander PHEV will offer 61 km of all-electric range from a 350-volt, 20kWh lithium-ion battery pack mounted below the floor and between the wheels for a low centre of gravity but minimal loss of ground clearance. This is a significant improvement in range over the previous model, and provides for exceptional electric range.
Matched with a 2.4-litre MIVEC four-cylinder Atkinson Cycle gasoline engine, enlarged 14.8-gallon fuel tank and enhancements for greater efficiency and range, Outlander PHEV will offer up to 687 km of combined electric-gasoline range on a single charge and single tank of fuel.
“The all-new Outlander PHEV is already the most successful launch in our 20-year history in Canada with enthusiasm from our dealers and customers like we’ve never seen before,” said Kenji Harada, president and CEO, Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada, Inc. “Canadian customers are seeking a plug-in hybrid with the practicality of an SUV particularly because of our climate, specifically excellent all-wheel drive. Our plug-in hybrid system together with our Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system is delivering the right balance on all fronts. In fact, customers are approaching our dealers in the thousands with deposits in hand. We celebrate our two decades in Canada confidently stepping into a bright future.”
Mitsubishi Motors’ expertise in electrification, motorsport-derived S-AWC all-wheel drive systems and an array of new technologies are all showcased in the 2023 Outlander PHEV, making it the most advanced and best-equipped vehicle the brand has ever offered.
Advanced PHEV System and Super All-Wheel Control
The 2023 Outlander PHEV is fitted with a new generation of Mitsubishi Motors’ twin-motor Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC)3 system, utilizing the front motor to drive the front wheels (and gasoline engine when needed), and a stand-alone rear-mounted motor to drive the rear axle. Both electric motors are more powerful than previous, with the front at 114-horsepower and rear at 134-horsepower, bringing combined system power to 248-horsepower and 332 lb/ft of torque.
S-AWC improves on traction, handling and stability. Further, Outlander PHEV distinguishes itself with an EV-based all-wheel control system that allows for the quick acceleration and smooth driving unique to electrified vehicles.
Automatic Optimal Drive Mode Selection Complemented with Driver Selected Modes
The crown jewel of the Mitsubishi Motors line-up in Canada. The Outlander PHEV system was extensively updated and revised to allow the vehicle to operate in EV mode more often. With an increased output of the front and rear motors and drive battery, the new Outlander PHEV minimizes starting the gasoline engine in as many scenarios as possible, even when accelerating while merging and passing on the expressway and in other city or suburban driving scenarios.
The optimal drive mode is automatically selected according to throttle input, driving conditions and remaining state of charge in the drive battery. EV Mode allows the vehicle to drive with the electric motors, using power from the drive battery. Series Hybrid Mode uses the gasoline engine to generate additional power to the drive battery, while continuing to allow the vehicle to be driven by the electric motors. Parallel Hybrid Mode uses the power of the gasoline engine to drive the front wheels, assisted by the electric motors. Efficient driving is made possible by switching automatically to the optimal choice among these three modes, according to throttle input, driving conditions and remaining state of charge in the drive battery.
Also available are three driver selected modes accessed by a switch to the right of the electric shift lever on the centre console: Battery Charge Mode, which charges the drive battery regardless of whether the car is driving or stationary; Battery Save Mode, which maintains the current state of charge in the drive battery while driving; and EV Priority Mode, which prioritizes driving with the electric motors only, without starting the gasoline engine for as long as possible.
Heat Pump Added
With EV Priority Mode, we have greatly reduced the frequency of the gasoline engine starting and increased the frequency of EV driving even while the cabin heater is utilized, through the use of a heat pump system. Increasing the output of the drive battery has also made it possible to use EV Priority Mode when using MI-PILOT or Adaptive Cruise Control.
Innovative Pedal Operation
Innovative pedal operation can accelerate and decelerate with single-pedal operation in nearly all driving scenarios, just by controlling the input of the accelerator pedal. Releasing the accelerator pedal will apply regenerative and mechanical braking with minimal need to apply the brake pedal to decelerate, resulting in better control on winding roads and more peace of mind on snowy roads. (Note: The brake pedal must be used when stronger deceleration is required or when bringing the vehicle to a complete stop.)
Regenerative Braking
Regenerative braking is used to generate additional electricity for the drive battery. During deceleration, the front and rear electric motors function as generators so that electricity can be generated and fed back into the lithium-ion drive battery pack. Regenerative braking occurs when the Outlander PHEV is in motion while the accelerator pedal is not being applied (coasting) or when the driver engages the brakes by pressing the brake pedal. The level of regenerative braking can be conveniently selected by the driver at any time using the steering wheel paddle shifters.
DC Fast-Charging
Making use of the onboard DC fast-charger, the pack can be filled to 80% capacity in only 38 minutes; Outlander PHEV is the only plug-in hybrid electric SUV to offer fast-charging capabilities. The vehicle also can be charged from a level-1 or level-2 wall charger, or via the internal combustion engine itself using Charge Mode while driving or parked.
Handsome and Value-Added Packaging
Value has been a hallmark for Outlander PHEV since it was launched for model year 2018 as the first affordable (mass) plug-in hybrid SUV in the country. With handsome packaging, Canadians can expect the long list of safety and comfort features. Four competitive price lines and one premium package are offered for Outlander PHEV. Pricing will be announced in early October.
